How is it almost Christmas? I feel like 2021 has been such a whirlwind. Starting vet school, building my business, traveling some amazing places....no wonder it flew by!
As most people do, I enjoy reflecting on the past year. What goals did I achieve? Which ones do I need to try harder for? What went well and what didn't.
So seeing as this is primarily a blog about horses, I thought I would talk about a few things they taught me this year.
The release is more important that the task. I want to say that again. The release is more important than the task. We are the same believe it or not. Each day is about work. All the bustle and grinding to make things happen. What do we love best about each day?? The release. This could be clocking out, this could be sitting in your car before coming inside, this could even be just the second your head hits that pillow. Either way the release is magic. Never under estimate the power of the release and what it can mean for both you and your horse.
There is no better sound than a happy horse munching on hay. I could listen to that for hours.
A grounded and quiet mind takes practice. Being able to eliminate the chatter and chaos for moments of silence and peace is a skill we all need to learn. The minute my brain gets distracted a horse quickly lets me know. Start small maybe one or two minutes at a time and build from there. Teach your brain how to be quiet. You won't regret it and your horse will thank you for it.
Be present.
PLAY! Run, buck, kick your heels... I don't care what you do but move and have fun doing it!
Horses have so much to teach us. Each one it seems has a different session. Hawk teaches me constantly how to laugh and loosen up while Jackson has taught me the power of connection and being present. I am forever grateful for the lessons they provide. Each client horse teaches me as well, just in a different way.
My goal is to keep these lessons close to my heart and in practice all year long. I never want to get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that I neglect to learn from the beautiful moments right in front of me.
What lesson(s) have your horses taught you? Feel free to comment them on here. I would love to read them!
